מגיפת הקורונה מתפשטת, אלפים מתים בכל רחבי העולם וערים ומדינות שלמות נכנסות להסגר כדי לעצור את התפשטות הנגיף. על פי ההערכות, כ-10,000 להט"בים התייצבו בפסטיבל Winter Party במיאמי שהתקיים כמתוכנן במשך שבוע (4-10 במרץ), על אף אזהרות ה-CDC (המרכזים לבקרת מחלות ומניעתן) להגביל או לבטל התכנסויות המוניות כדי להפסיק את התפשטות נגיף הקורונה. פסטיבל מסיבת החורף במיאמי נחשב לאחד האירועים המרכזיים של הקהילה הגאה בארה"ב, וללהט"בים רבים ברחבי העולם שנוהרים אליו מדי שנה. הוא נערך מדי שנה מאז 1994. כעת מתגלה שאחד המבלים בפסטיבל שנערך בתחילת החודש נדבק בנגיף הקורונה.

"אנו כותבים כדי ליידע אתכם כי במוצאי שבת הודיעו לנו שאחד מאורחי מסיבת החורף שלנו נבדק כחיובי ל-COVID-19", נכתב בהצהרה שפרסם צוות ההפקה באינסטגרם, "אנו מודים להם על כך שהעירו אותנו, במיוחד לאור העובדה שהם לא חוו תסמינים במהלך מסיבת החורף".

Greetings Winter Party Guests, I am writing to let you know that on Saturday night (the 14th), I was informed that one of our Winter Party Festival (WPF) guests has tested positive for COVID-19 this last week. We are grateful to them for alerting us, particularly given that they were not experiencing symptoms during WPF. While we know there are many places people could have been exposed before and after Winter Party as this virus has developed, we wanted to make sure you have this information as soon as possible. The health and safety of anyone who participates in any Task Force event is of great importance to us. Information and circumstances have changed rapidly since WPF. We continue to encourage all WPF guests to monitor their health, practice social distancing, wash hands with soap, use hand sanitizer and contact their doctor if they think they are exhibiting symptoms. If you test positive for COVID-19, please contact those you were in direct contact with so they can take steps to monitor their health and speak with their doctors. The educational posters throughout WPF venues and 10,000 hand sanitizers we distributed over the weekend were both appreciated and utilized by attendees. "למרות שאנחנו יודעים שיש הרבה מקומות שאנשים היו יכולים להיחשף לפני ואחרי מסיבת החורף עם התפשטות הנגיף הזה", הם מוסיפים, "רצינו לוודא שתקבלו את המידע הזה בהקדם האפשרי".

עוד נכתב כי ננקטו אמצעי זהירות בפסטיבל, כמו "פוסטרים חינוכיים" שהוצבו במקומות שונים ובבקבוקי אלכוג'ל שהופצו. ובכל זאת, באירוע היו מעורבים קבוצה גדולה של אנשים מכל רחבי העולם במשך שעות ארוכות, רוקדים ללא חולצה ועוסקים בפעילויות אחרות, שסביר להניח שחיטוי הידיים לא יועיל להם.

רק ב-15 במרץ, כמה ימים לאחר סיום מסיבת החורף, המליץ ה-CDC לבטל או לדחות אירועים של למעלה מ-50 איש בשמונה השבועות הקרובים. אולם ה-CDC כבר ביקש ממארגני האירועים לנקוט בפעולה אגרסיבית כדי לעצור את התפשטות הנגיף לפני כן.
