אבל בכדורגל האנגלי, שנפרד הערב (שבת) מאחד הגדולים בתולדותיו - בובי צ'רלטון, שהלך לעולמו בגיל 86. צ'רלטון, שכיכב לאורך הקריירה במנצ'סטר יונייטד, לקח גם חלק בזכייה היחידה במונדיאל של אנגליה עד היום, ב-1966.
בשדים האדומים נפרדו מאגדת המועדון: "מילים לעולם לא יספיקו". קפטן המועדון לשעבר, גארי נוויל, כתב: "אני כל כך מצטער לשמוע את החדשות על סר בובי צ'רלטון. הכדורגלן האנגלי הכי גדול והשגריר הגדול ביותר של מנצ'סטר יונייטד. אלוף על המגרש ומחוצה לו, ו'באזבי בייב' שסלל את הדרך לכולם להגיע ליונייטד. נוח על משכבך בשלום סר בובי".
ההתאחדות האנגלית לכדורגל נפרדה: "שמענו בלב כבד על מותו של סר בובי צ'רלטון. הוא היה חלק בלתי נפרד מקמפיין הזכייה שלנו במונדיאל 1966, סר בובי רשם 106הופעות וכבש 49 פעמים עבור נבחרת שלושת האריות. אגדה אמיתית של המשחק שלנו. לעולם לא נשכח אותך, סר בובי".
ג'ף הרסט, שזכה עם צ'רלטון במונדיאל 1966 וכבש שלושער בגמר, כתב על חברו: "חדשות עצובות מאוד היום. אחד מהגדולים באמת, סר בובי צ'רלטון, הלך לעולמו. לעולם לא נשכח אותו ולא כל עולם הכדורגל, שלא ישכח קולגה וחבר. הוא ייחסר מאוד לכל המדינה. שולח תנחומים למשפחה והחברים".
