על פי הדיווחים, מדובר בקמפיין ענק שהוצאו עליו מיליארדי דולרים, וכל מפורסם או מפורסמת שהגיעו לפסטיבל קיבלו סכום נאה לפרסם משם תמונות, כחלק מהניסיון לשקם את התדמית של ערב הסעודית, אחרי מקרים קשים של רצח ואלימות קשה כלפי אנשי תקשורת ופעילי זכויות אדם בשנתיים האחרונות. היו גם סלבריטאים - למשל הדוגמנית התמיד-פוליטית אמילי רטאייקאוסקי - שסירבו להצעה לנסוע לפסטיבל, בדיוק מהסיבה הזאת.

In a series of Instagram stories posted by transgender model @teddy_quinlivan , it was revealed that fellow model @emrata had turned down the trip, evidently aware of the country’s human rights crisis. “It is very important to me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community, freedom of expression and the right to a free press.
