איקר קסיאס עורר סערה מוקדם יותר היום (ראשון) לאחר שהודיע בטוויטר על יציאתו מהארון ומאוחר יותר מחק את הציוץ. ככל הנראה מדובר בניסיון של קסיאס להשתיק את השמועות השונות באתרי הרכילות שמקשרים את קסיאס עצמו לנשים שונות.
בעקבות זאת, הוא חטף ביקורת רבה על כך ש"יצא מהארון" וניצל את המאבק הלהט"בי למען רעש תקשורתי, אותה סערה שככל הנראה הובילה למחיקת הציוץ. קרלוס פויול, חברו לנבחרת ספרד שהגיב על הציוץ, ידע מראש על כוונותיו והגיב בהתאם.
קסיאס עצמו טען כי פרצו לו לחשבון ואמר שהוא מתנצל בפני קהילת הלהט"ב ובפני עוקביו. בתקשורת הספרדית נטען כי מדובר בשקר, וכי הוא וקרלוס פויול ידעו על כך מראש.
בהמשך גם פויול התנצל: "טעיתי, מצטער על הבדיחה המגושמת שפגעה בהרבה אנשים. אני מכבד ותומך בקהילת ה-LGTBIQA+". בכל אופן, הרשת סערה >>
