ליברפול אמנם הפסידה אתמול (שבת) בגמר ליגת האלופות, 1:0 לריאל מדריד. הקבוצה זכתה העונה בגביע הליגה ובגביע האנגלי, אך הפסידה בנקודה את אליפות אנגליה והפסידה בגמר ליגת האלופות.
הקבוצה הודיעה עוד לפני המשחק על כך שתעשה מצעד שחוגג את העונה האחרונה, אחת המרשימות בתולדות המועדון. אוהדים רבים הגיעו לחגוג ברחבי העיר.
