זה קרה בעונת האלופות הקודמת, כשקלופ התראיין וסיפק הצהרה שלא חשב שתיגמר ככה. "איפה הגמר של ליגת האלופות בעונה הבאה?", הוא שאל, "איסטנבול? תזמינו לי מקום במלון".
שנה מאוחר יותר, כשליברפול ספגה 6:2 כואב בסיכום שני המשחקים מול ריאל מדריד, הקהל העלה מן העוב את הציטוטים של קלופ וגיכך: "תבטלו לקלופ את ההזמנה".
