לרוב כשאנחנו שומעים על אבות בספורט הקונוטציה היא שלילית. אב שמקלל מאמן, אב שיוצא להגנת בנו בתקשורת ורומס את קבוצתו או אב שמעורב עד לרמת דקות המשחק של בנו. כמובן שכמעט תמיד מגיעה אחר כך ביקורת על ההתנהלות, אבל במקרה של לברון ג'יימס הביקורת הגיעה בלי קשר למקרה עצמו.
