אני זוכרת שלפני 69 שנים ישבתי ליד הרדיו הישן הזה, מקשיבה להצבעות על תכנית החלוקה של האו"ם. היו לי נייר ועיפרון וספרתי כל "כן" ששמעתי. היה מתח עצום באוויר, ולא ידענו אם האו"ם יאשר את התוכנית, ובכך ייצור מדינה יהודית עצמאית לאחר 2,000 שנות גלות.
כאשר אוֹזְוַלְדוּ אֶאוּקְלִידִס די סוֹאוּזָה אָרָנְיָה (נשיא העצרת הכללית של האו"ם בעת ההצבעה בשנת 1947) הגיע למסקנה כי ההחלטה עברה, קפצנו באוויר משמחה והתרגשות. לאחר 2,000 שנה, סוף סוף הייתה לנו מדינה יהודית ריבונית. זאת היה אותה התרגשות שהרגשנו כשהאיש הראשון צעד על הירח - אבל האמת שגם אם תכפילו את זה באלף, זה עדיין לא יהיה מספיק כדי לתאר את התחושה שהרגשנו באותו יום.

I remember 69 years ago sitting next to this old radio, listening to the votes of the United Nations Partition Plan. I had a paper and a pencil and I counted every "Yes" I heard. There was enormous tension in the air, and we didn't know if the United Nations would approve the plan, thereby creating an Independent Jewish State after 2000 years of exile.
When Osvaldo Euclides de Sousa Aranha (President of the United Nations General Assembly in 1947 during the vote) concluded that the resolution passed, we jumped in the air from joy and excitement. After 2000 years, we finally had a sovereign Jewish state. It was like the excitement of the first man on the moon --but if you multiplied that by 1000, it still wouldn't be enough to describe the sensation we felt on that day.
There was no Whatsapp or Internet back then, but everyone flocked to the streets and started dancing. It was better than Woodstock. It was one of those moments where you could see history being made.
The next history I would like to hear being made on this radio is the announcement of a peace deal with our neighbors. I hope that we can find a way to work this out".
